One day, Rıfkı meets a young woman in a bookstore. He likes this young woman at first sight; he cannot get her out of his mind. He only knows the name she gives to the bookstore and the address of the school where she says she works. He calls the school, finds her and asks her for an appointment. But, strangely, it is not the woman he met in the bookstore who shows up for the appointment. How can this be? Why did the woman in the bookstore give someone else's name and address?
Throughout the novel, Rıfkı tries to unravel what lies behind the strange behavior and incomprehensible attitudes of Piraye, whom he falls in love with and later marries, and her close friends Neriman, Şükriye and Semahat. What is the secret that binds these four women together? Why have they been almost inseparable since their school days?
