Description
This book is an attempt at a dictionary of the movable and immovable, tangible and intangible legacy of a dominant hill. The hill on which the Old City and Castle of Mardin sits overlooks Mesopotamia to the south. The cold war-era Air Radar Base in the castle and the windows of Mardin Houses share this view. The castle, where archaeological excavations and conservation efforts have been ongoing for years, is still a military zone and closed to the public. All of the glossary entries consist of quotations. These quotations are from news reports, military and geographical sources and interviews I conducted in Mardin. I dream of opening the castle to the public, to other beings and possibilities by reconnecting military, archaeological, architectural and geographical terms. This is also a question about art and storytelling; is there a wide gap between dominating the landscape and dominating it?
