Laschen is a journalist sent to the war in Lebanon to write an article for his newspaper. The unrelenting turmoil of the Middle East spreads its sparks on him too. When he turns his gaze to the brutal, unreasonable and ruthless face of war, there is on the one hand the moral reckoning he enters into with himself while searching for a way to report the truth, and on the other hand the reckoning brought about by questioning the relationship he has established with his wife, from whom he has been distant in every sense, through the lover he has acquired in Beirut.Love and War effectively and strikingly depicts how the traces left by these phenomena, which make us experience the most intense emotions, on a middle-aged man push him to confront himself. This novel, which was filmed in 1981 by Volker Schlöndorff, who also adapted novels such as “The Tin Drum“ and “The Chewed Honor of Katherina Blum“, is perhaps a warning, a call to reckoning with ourselves, a call to reckoning with ourselves, for all of us to live as if situations that are indelible in history and have become a constant part of life are normal.
